Small rivers project Small rivers project The project presupposes improvement of the river path and riverside areas of a small rural river Kova, passing through a beautiful area of Nizhny Novgorod which after the clean up and improvement will add to the beauty of the city landscape. The river for us is:
One of important indicators of life standard of the population in a town is the convenience and level of adaptation to human needs of the place of living. ![]() Currently the attitude to small urban rivers in Nizhny Novgorod and other cities and towns of Russia fits well into an old Russian tradition of nature use. The river served a sanitation canal, which carries away in spring flood all the household and agricultural waste accumulated in the river path and on the banks. However in the conditions of urban growth and the growth of automobile traffic the condition of small urban rivers aggravated by the practice of illegal construction of private garages on the banks and in the buffer zone. Under these circumstances the amount of garbage on the banks and in the river paths is growing catastrophically fast. ![]() Why this issue is so important? If a person daily observes dumps in the close vicinity of his house is becoming a part of his life, habit and consequently of the mentality of the population. On the other hand a person has an image of how it should be from the sources of culture literature, art etc. Evidently these sides of human mentality are conflicting between each other. This makes a person unbalanced and nervous. So the problem of the small rivers lies in the traditional mentality of our population, in the belief in temporary difficulties, in the passive waiting for future improvement of life coming from the higher echelons of power. To change the fate of rivers we need to change the ideology of the population and shift from the passive expectation or confrontation to the channel of cooperation with various layers of the population adults, teens, kids business, nature conservation agencies authorities and amenity services. ![]()
